Snowy Winter for the Birds
It's been a snowy, rainy and cold winter at our farm. As you can see, even the roofs of the bird feeders are in need of a little snow removal! If you have the space, don't just rely on bird feeders to take care of your feather friends in the winter, plant a garden just for them.
Perennials that winter birds love include Echinacea (coneflowers), Asters, Rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susans) and Liatris. To provide bird feed from these attractive plants, do not trim back spent flowers in the fall, instead leave the seed heads intact to provide food for the birds. In the spring, once new growth is showing, trim back these perennials to start all over again.
Mix in a few of these hardy, and deer resistant varieties in your garden to provide winter birds with a bounty of seeds to feed on all winter. Don't forget to add a few native shrubs which help to provide winter shelter for birds.
