How to Plant Hostas
Hostas are tough, shade perennials with fabulous foliage and dainty, sometimes fragrant flowers that appear mid summer. Despite their exotic appearance, hostas are very easy to grow. For best success, start with healthy hosta plants that are container grown and show active leaf production when you purchase them. If you are new to planting and dividing hostas steer clear of bare-root plants. Hosta varieties vary in size for 8 inches tall, to over 5 feet in height, so only purchase hostas that are identified by variety and have size information on them. Say "no" to bargain bins or unlabeled hostas. How to plant your hosta:
- Give
your Hosta plant a good start by amending your soil with organic matter
(no animal manure!), compost, peat moss or leaf mold.
- Prepare the planting hole, digging it as deep and as wide as your container.
- Remove the hosta from its pot and lightly tease the roots, separating slightly.
- Place the hosta in the hole, with the crown at soil level, and back-fill with soil.
- Broadcast Down to Earth All-Purpose Organic fertilizer around the base of the hosta.
- Water well and mulch around the base of the plant.
Hostas love water as long as your soil has good drainage. The more water, the larger the leaf and the healthier the plant. Hosta plants thrive in full shade to part sun. Avoid the hot afternoon sun which will probably scorch the leaves.
