Tips for Planning a Successful Tomato Garden

For a successful tomato garden this year, take a few minutes to plan your tomato garden before you shop for tomato plants or seeds. It is easy to get carried away in the spring shopping for tomato plants, lets face it, they look innocent in their small pots with new lush leafy growth. 



Here are a few quick tips for planning a successful tomato garden:

  1. Size matters. Tomato plants require ample room both horizontally and vertically to grow. As an average estimate figure on 3 square feet for each tomato plant.
  2. Select varieties that are suitable for your growing season. If you have a shorter season choose varieties such as Beefmaster tomato , Supersweet 100 cherry tomato or Bush Early Girl tomato.
  3. Grow a selection of tomato plants for different uses.
  • Cherry tomatoes: Select at least 1 variety to eat fresh off of the vine or to toss daily into salads. Top-sellers at our farm include Supersweet 100 or Sun Sugar Cherry tomato .
  • Slicing tomatoes: Select at least 1 large slicing variety for grilled burgers or a basil, tomato, cheese sandwich. Popular, reliable producing varieties include Conestoga heirloom tomato , Super Fantastic tomato, Beefmaster tomato.
  • Novelty tomatoes: Every garden must have at least 1 of these popular fun, tasty varieties. A few suggestions include: Black Krim heirloom tomato , Kellogg's Breakfast tomato, Green Zebra tomato or Purple Russian tomato.  
  • Salsa tomatoes: If you grow your own garden then you have to make your own salsa! A few of our favorite salsa varieties include: Roma tomato, Juliet Grape tomato and Italian Tree heirloom tomato.
  • Cooking and canning tomatoes: Select at least 1 variety to using for making your own marinara sauce. Favorites include: Amish Paste heirloom tomato and Italian Heirloom tomato.
