How to Freeze Basil

Freezing Basil

Basil is a tender herb that does not grow year around in USDA gardening zones 8 and below. Unlike many other fresh herbs, basil also does not do well if brought inside over the winter as it requires 8+ hours of daylight to thrive. Being basil lovers at Farm Fresh Living we have devised this easy way to enjoy fresh basil all season long!

  • During the harvest months when basil is at its peak growth, harvest bunches of fresh basil leaves.
  • Chop basil leaves up into large pieces.
  • Press into ice cube trays and cover with 1 tablespoon of water. Freeze overnight.
  • Pop out basil ice cubes and place in freeze bags.
  • To use; drop 1-2 basil cubes into soups, stews, pasta sauce or thaw out to use in salads and spreads.
